AGM Alts Weekly | 6.14.26: Big conversations
AGM Alts Weekly #159: Making private markets more public, every week.
For too long, private equity funds have relied on manual processes — spreadsheets, scattered documents, disjointed data — to track complex investment and ownership structures. It’s slow, error-prone, and not scalable. And when regulators, investors, or auditors come knocking, it’s a fire drill every time.
At DealsPlus, we help private equity funds digitise investment and ownership structures, eliminating data silos. Our software helps power key workflows such as: quarterly reporting, audits, compliance, and exits.
Good morning from London. I’m back from Berlin, where the private equity industry held its annual SuperReturn conference.
SuperReturn doesn’t call their conference “the Capital of Private Capital” for no reason. The days were filled with GP / LP meetings. In what could be considered “speed dating” for GPs and LPs, the jam-packed time in Berlin was a chance for GPs to spend time and build relationships with new and prospective LPs.
Even some enterprising store owners found ways to host GP/LP meetings. The furniture store (photo below) up the block from the conference venue offered up its showroom furniture as the perfect place for comfortable meeting seating.
Big space, big conversations
There were lots of weighty conversations, spanning all facets of private markets as many of the industry’s executives took to the stage.
On Tuesday, I chaired the SuperReturn Private Wealth Summit. The first panel I moderated was a discussion between UBS Co-Head of the Unified Global Alternatives business, Johannes Roth, and KKR MD and Head of Global Wealth Solutions - International, Markus Egloff, which covered some of the most pressing topics in private markets and private wealth, as Markus shared in this LinkedIn post.
The Summit then moved to a panel discussion that I moderated on why European wealth managers are investing in private equity, with KKR Partner and Co-CEO of K-PEC Alisa Amarosa Wood, HSBC Head of Alternatives, Private Bank Emma Cory, Julius Baer Managing Director, Head of Fund Advisory Adrienne Jarsvall, and UBS Lead Private Equity Advisory Platform, UGA Emma Corbishley.
Tiny space, big conversations
At a time when private markets continues to face challenges from both external forces and industry-specific pressures, as well as the rapid ascent and unknowns of AI, it was important to have conversations to hear directly from industry leaders about how they are navigating a time of both uncertainty and opportunity.
On Wednesday and Thursday, the Tiny Space Cabins (see a picture of AGM’s home for the week, Tiny Space Cabin #53, in this LinkedIn post below from Apax) served as the studio for AGM Live podcasts produced in partnership with Deirdre Bolton and Prosek.
The Tiny Space Cabin certainly lived up to its name, with one podcast guest remarking afterward that it “felt like it was 1960s Germany and we were trying to see how many people we could fit in a VW Bug!”
But while the space might have been tiny, the conversations were anything but.
The podcasts were produced by a world-class team from Prosek, with Deirdre Bolton driving the bus, producer Mick Reed managing to somehow fit the ever-important three-camera view into the Tiny Space, and the Prosek team Maria Gonzalez, Sara Cousins, and Jack Regan doing a fantastic job pre- and post-production.
“10 Things I Think I Think” - SuperReturn edition
A number of themes that could shape the future of private markets and private wealth repeatedly came up in conversations this week.
This weekend’s newsletter will dive into key takeaways in the format of one of my favorite newsletter columns.
Growing up, Sports Illustrated was one of my favorite reads. One column I’d never miss? Peter King’s “Monday Morning Quarterback” (“MMQB”) and his “10 Things I Think I Think” section.
As The Athletic’s Managing Editor, Sports Business Dan Shanoff artfully wrote in his tribute on LinkedIn to his former colleague’s last column for Sports Illustrated in 2024, the MMQB column was well ahead of its time. “In the late 1990s, [when the sports journalism industry was] very much still committed to the primacy of print, Peter understood immediately and intuitively what fans wanted to consume and how powerful his digital column could be.”
Aspects of ESPN and the era of sports reporting and journalism that I grew up with have certainly offered inspiration for elements of how I’ve chosen to create and share content on AGM.
MMQB and Peter King’s “10 Things I Think I Think” section is definitely one of those inspirations.
King managed to mix relevant news, informed and original takes and opinions, and dot-connecting to make the reader feel like they knew what was going on in the NFL a layer deeper than the news could provide.
Without further ado, here are “10 Things I Think I Think” SuperReturn edition.
10 Things I Think I Think
1/ I think private markets have evolved to a point where LPs require “solutions” and private markets allocations are no longer just tactical decisions. A common theme that came up in a number of podcast conversations was references to solutions for LPs. As private markets expand in size and scale, they are also expanding the solution set they can offer LPs, including exposure to asset classes, new product creation, and holistic portfolio construction. This solutions-oriented mindset among LPs means that different strategies might become core allocations in private markets portfolios going forward. The evolution to a solutions-oriented approach to private markets comes at a good time to meet the wealth management industry’s current balancing act: managing customization with scale and differentiation.
2/ I think EQT’s acquisition of Coller Capital, a leading secondaries investment firm, is emblematic of this evolution into a solutions-oriented world of private markets. As I wrote on LinkedIn when EQT acquired Coller, secondaries are now very much top of mind for LPs because there is now “active portfolio management” of private markets portfolios by LPs.
3/ I think it’s important that GPs and LPs alike make boring cool again. A number of conversations, including the discussion with KKR’s Markus Egloff and UBS’s Johannes Roth, referenced the importance of investing in “boring,” essential businesses.
4/ I think AI could make traditional industrial and software companies a compelling risk-adjusted way to invest in AI. This viewpoint was referenced by some of the industry’s leading investment firms in conversations this past week. AI will have a major impact on traditional industrial businesses and software companies. A number of podcast guests noted that AI can create efficiencies in traditional companies, meaningfully improving margins and having a major impact on the bottom line. So perhaps the “Rule of 40” could indeed become the “Rule of 50” or “Rule of 60,” as Vista Equity Partners has shared.
5/ I think value creation will loom large in an era where “12 is the new 5” as Bain & Company noted in their Global Private Equity Report. It will take the ability to “roll up your sleeves,” as Brookfield Private Equity CEO Anuj Ranjan has said is required to create value. This sentiment was echoed by many executives. The challenge? Having the resources to have enough scale to have an appropriately sized operating platform to drive value post-deal. A firm’s platform and post-deal value creation capabilities might be what separates the top-quartile funds from more middling performers.
6/ I think European tech is going from strength to strength. Two enormous financing rounds by European companies were announced this week. General Atlantic led a €1B financing round for Iceye, which will help the Finnish satellite intelligence company expand to meet demand for sovereign technology systems. Germany’s Neura Robotics secured up to $1.4B in funding to build a physical artificial intelligence platform and scale production to several million robots by 2030. The financing round came from investors including Amazon, Nvidia, Qualcomm, Tether, Bosch, Lingotto, Schaeffler, the European Investment Bank, and InterAlpen Partners. We see this trend first-hand as an investor in InterAlpen and as a co-investor with them into one of Neura’s first institutional financing rounds in 2023 and as an investor in over 24 companies and a few funds in Europe.
7/ I think this is the era of sovereign investing. The aforementioned fundraising news from Iceye provides a hint: there’s a desire for regionally based funds to back regional winners. And there’s an imperative from governments to back companies that further national interests. That’s certainly true in defense and other critical industries, like healthcare, AI, and enterprise software, where mission-critical systems could become geopolitical flashpoints. Another example of the intersection of government and investment in this age of sovereign investing? The Scaleup Fund Europe, which EQT has been selected by the European Commission to lead, will now be Europe’s largest technology growth fund at €5B.
8/ I think dispersion is top of mind for GPs and LPs. This topic came up consistently in conversations this week. Performance has always been top of mind for GPs and LPs alike, but with outsized winners becoming really outsized winners (read: SpaceX, Anthropic, OpenAI), the gap will widen between managers that access the right companies and drive value and those that don’t. Speaking of SpaceX, Coatue shared some interesting data about just how much scale matters. The market’s largest companies actually have a higher percentage chance of 10x’ing, as the below chart illustrates. Now, it’s worth noting that achieving a $100B valuation is rarefied air, but it’s also clear the scale begets scale, as Blackstone’s Steve Schwarzman has said.
9/ I think that General Atlantic’s Joe & The Juice popup was perhaps the most popular food stand at SuperReturn. The line was consistently over 30 minutes long. Joe & The Juice happens to be a portfolio company of GA’s. This type of experiential marketing is a brilliant way to bring a firm’s portfolio to life, particularly if a firm invests in consumer brands. I expect we’ll see more GPs lean into this as they look to build relatable brands in the wealth channel. This is a topic that Prosek’s Jen Prosek and I talked about at a Prosek event in Berlin as well, noting how important it is for firms to differentiate in a “sea of sameness,” as EQT’s Henry Jones has said in the past.
10/ I think everyone should watch this video with a world-class performer on and off the field. Juventus’ Giorgio Chiellini is considered to be one of the best defenders of all time and is now the Director of Football Strategy for Juventus. He shares what it takes to be a world-class performer in life, sports, and business, the pressures and joys athletes face, and why it’s so important to balance the on-field product with off-field business imperatives. This is a must-listen as private equity makes its way into the world of sport.
11/ (bonus) I think Tiny Space Cabins have built a nice business. Small space, low overhead, high margins. I wonder which private equity firm that attends SuperReturn will invest in Tiny Space.
