AGM Alts Weekly | 6.28.26: Getting in the game
AGM Alts Weekly #161: Making private markets more public, every week.
For too long, private equity funds have relied on manual processes — spreadsheets, scattered documents, disjointed data — to track complex investment and ownership structures. It’s slow, error-prone, and not scalable. And when regulators, investors, or auditors come knocking, it’s a fire drill every time.
At DealsPlus, we help private equity funds digitise investment and ownership structures, eliminating data silos. Our software helps power key workflows such as: quarterly reporting, audits, compliance, and exits.
Good morning from Washington, DC. I’m back from a week in New York after a few weeks of travel across London and Berlin for SuperReturn, meetings with our founders in Europe, and podcasts.
The World Cup energy in New York was palpable this week. Perhaps no more so than the droves of Norwegian supporters doing their signature “row” chant in Times Square.
With the World Cup in full swing, perhaps it’s fitting that sports were at the epicenter of the news this week in private markets.
Just a few days before the start of Wimbledon, General Atlantic announced that tennis star Novak Djokovic joined the firm as a Global Strategic Advisor.
Djokovic, who holds a record 24 Grand Slam singles titles and has an all-time record of 428 weeks at World No. 1, a record eight Year-End No. 1 finishes, and unprecedented 40 ATP Masters 1000 titles, will work closely with the firm’s leadership, portfolio companies, and investors, bringing perspectives on leadership, resilience, and innovation, according to a press release from GA about the partnership.
General Atlantic Chairman & CEO Bill Ford wrote in a LinkedIn post that “Novak’s career is a masterclass in performance, resilience, and discipline.” Ford noted that “very few people understand what it takes to sustain high performance and achieve excellence like Novak.”
Ford’s comments aim to create a link between elite performance on the court and excellence in business.
GA is not the first firm to create links between its investing activities and elite sports performance. EQT recently struck a partnership with the ATP to be the Tour’s Official Private Markets Partner. EQT’s partnership with ATP followed Carlyle’s partnership with Oracle Red Bull Racing.
These developments illustrate the increasing convergence of culture and finance, as firms look to build brand equity in the wealth channel.
What’s notable about Djokovic’s partnership with GA is that he’s not just an ambassador. He’s going to be an advisor to the firm and portfolio companies, integrated with the firm’s investment activities, and working with the firm’s executives and portfolio companies.
According to a Bloomberg article from this week, General Atlantic has already made some sports team and sports-related investments, including Grupo Aguilas, the owner of Mexico City’s Club America soccer team, and the Azteca Stadium. GA also invested in Brazilian sports media and marketing agency LiveMode.
Djokovic said that he plans to devote time to helping GA invest in sports tech, wellness, and healthcare.
“That’s actually one of the areas that I really look forward to exploring with Bill and General Atlantic,” Djokovic said. There are “very compelling opportunities in sports technology, wellness space, healthcare is something that I very deeply care for.”
Funds getting in the game
Djokovic’s role with General Atlantic, in many respects, represents the evolutionary arc of the intersection between sports and investing.
Private equity has ramped up its investment in sports teams and leagues in recent years, as I’ve written about here, here, here, and here.
For good reason, too. Sports teams have proven to be attractive (and relatively uncorrelated) investments over the long term.
A chart from a Goldman Sachs report on sports investing illustrates the compounding nature of growth in sports teams’ valuations.
Dedicated sports funds have been created to capture investment opportunities in minority ownership of sports teams.
Sports team ownership and the broader sports ecosystem represent a large and growing market opportunity. Apollo Sports Capital pegs the sports economy market size at $2.5T.
Sports is increasingly being viewed as an asset class that encompasses leagues, teams, media rights, real estate, and stadium infrastructure, enabling funds to create large investment platforms to serve sports teams, leagues, and real estate opportunities with private equity, private credit, and real estate strategies.
This institutionalization of sports investing has meant that many of the world’s largest alternative asset managers have either built (Ares, Sixth Street, CVC, Apollo, Blue Owl’s Dyal HomeCourt Partners) or bought (KKR via its Arctos acquisition) capabilities and specialist sports funds, like RedBird Capital Partners and Arctos, have been built to take ownership stakes in sports teams.
Funds are also getting into the game by establishing partnerships that reflect their brand with sports teams and leagues.
EQT’s recent partnership with the ATP Tour as the Official Private Markets Partner is emblematic of alternative asset managers seeking to associate their brands with sports teams and leagues that reflect their culture and values.
Brand matters in private markets more than ever. And firms will be (rightfully so) making a push to associate their brands with something that resonates with investors as the industry undergoes a wave of consumerization amid an increasing focus on the wealth channel.
The next evolution in the collision of sports and investing has been the rise of athletes investing into private companies, funds, and sports teams.
Athletes getting in the investing game
Athletes may have a short shelf life with their careers, but they are increasingly becoming involved in investing in both sports teams and companies where they can add value through expertise, brand, or marketing associations.
The rise of social media has played a role in athlete investors being able to bring the power of their social media following to help companies grow their brand and drive sales.
Look no further than Serena Williams’ partnership with Ro as an example of the power of a company leveraging a sports star to help grow its business. Ro CEO Zachariah Reitano told Bloomberg in an interview that “it wasn't just a one-time spike,” he said. “We’ve seen an elevated and consistent ability for her story to resonate and drive traffic.”
The ability for fans to connect directly with athletes has also created an opportunity for athletes to leverage their platforms and brands to enhance both the value of sports franchises and their own investments, as I wrote in the 3.31.24 AGM Alts Weekly.
Digitally native teams like Angel City that have been built with the new paradigm for fan engagement in mind are poised to succeed in this brave new world of sports. Their ability to leverage the platform and brand they’ve built has proved to engage fans, enable players to connect directly with fans who believe in a shared vision of growing the sport, and prove to sponsors that being in front of fans is good business.
Sixth Street’s Alan Waxman said as much in a 2023 Bloomberg article after they purchased the NWSL’s Bay FC.
Waxman highlights two transformative trends that are driving the growth in women’s sports:
One is the emergence of streaming services, which has made it easier to reach viewers and know who they are.
Two is the power of social media to connect fans directly with players on a day-to-day basis. “You can follow them and see what they’re thinking,” says Waxman. “What are they eating? How are they training?”
The rise of athlete investors is becoming mainstream.
Just this past week, Flatpay announced the addition of French national soccer team star and Atletico Madrid player Antoine Griezmann as a new investor.
Griezmann joins the German national team and Eintracht Frankfurt star Mario Gotze (who scored the game-winning goal in the World Cup for Germany in 2014) and the Italian national team and AC Milan star Paolo Maldini as an investor in Flatpay (over halfway to an athlete-investor 5-a-side team!).
A number of athletes have focused on building out their investing activities, either personally or through fund vehicles, during or after their careers.
Notable athlete investors include NBA’s Kevin Durant (35V), tennis’ Serena Williams (Serena Ventures), F1’s Nico Rosberg (Rosberg Ventures), NBA’s Magic Johnson (Magic Johnson Enterprises), NBA’s Andre Iguodala (Mosaic General Partnership), and Bundesliga’s Mario Gotze (Companion-M), amongst many others.
Mario Gotze is an example of an athlete who has built out an investment platform, Companion-M, to leverage his knowledge, brand, and network to invest in European startups and funds. He’s dedicated significant time and effort to building a network of high-quality founders and funds, enabling him to invest in a number of top startups and helping his portfolio companies grow, just like many top VCs do. He’s also built out a network that creates a flywheel for his companies and funds, hosting events for Companion-M founders, funds, and contacts across the business world, as he did in New York this past week (pictured with one of Companion-M’s founders, Dr. Jonathan Leary of Remedy Place - R).
Athletes are also increasingly investing in other sports teams, bringing their knowledge and experiences as players to bear to help guide clubs on and off the field.
Tom Brady is an investor in a number of sports teams across different leagues, including:
Las Vegas Raiders (NFL): Acquired a roughly 5% ownership stake.
Las Vegas Aces (WNBA): Acquired a minority stake.
Birmingham City FC (English Football League): Invested as a minority owner.
Las Vegas Night Owls (Major League Pickleball): Founding investor.
It’s becoming increasingly commonplace for athletes to invest in teams where they used to don the jersey as a player.
Juventus and LAFC’s Giorgio Chiellini is a recent example of this trend, investing in LAFC after he retired from playing for the club.
Leo Messi and David Beckham have been prime examples of this trend, negotiating the ability to take ownership stakes in MLS clubs after retiring from their playing careers.
This trend is positive, in my view. The athletes are the drivers of value creation in increasing sports team valuations. Yes, media rights drive up revenues, but without players, there would be no media deals.
I’ve long believed that all players should have the ability to own the upside of a league or team’s growth. There are a number of nuances, complications, and challenges that make this difficult, but the creation of a phantom equity program with vesting for players (like startups, and, with Facebook, OpenAI, and Anthropic engineers being offered larger than NBA-like contracts, couldn’t there be something similar?) could provide a solution to enable players to be rewarded for their contribution to growing the value of their respective teams and leagues.
From ambassadors to advisors
Recent trends in athlete involvement with alternative asset managers have mainly centered on brand ambassador partnerships, such as the one Blackstone recently rolled out with golfer Tommy Fleetwood.
What makes GA’s partnership with Djokovic so interesting is that Djokovic will be an involved member of the team as a strategic advisor. His involvement will seemingly be more focused on sourcing, investing, and post-deal value creation than on being a brand partner. I would also imagine that Djokovic’s brand will help expand GA’s brand and provide marketing value to the firm and its portfolio companies through the association with him.
Ares did something similar to GA in 2022, establishing the Ares Sports, Media and Entertainment Finance Advisory Board, adding a number of talented athletes to their roster, including Mia Hamm, Grant Hill, and Mark Teixeira.
With athletes ramping up their own investment activities, could the next trend be for alternative asset managers to add the world’s leading athletes as Strategic Advisors or Operating Partners that are involved in investment firm’s sourcing, investing, and value creation activities?
Perhaps Djokovic was right to say he “like[s] to disrupt, like[s] to challenge the status quo on and off the court” in his interview about joining GA, since he could very well be a trend-setter in the next evolution in the collision of sports and investing.
I certainly wouldn’t bet against more alternative asset managers and athletes teaming up to get in the game.
AGM Index
AGM has created an Index to track the leading publicly traded alternative asset managers.
Some of the industry’s largest alternative asset managers are publicly traded — and their net inflows can serve as a window into how private markets are perceived by investors and allocators allocating capital to alternative investments.
Note: AUM figures are based on fee-paying AUM where applicable.
“Alt Goes Mainstream is category of one.” Global Head of Marketing & Communications, $X00B AUM alternative asset manager.
“When it comes to the intersection of alternative investments and wealth management, Michael just gets it.” CIO, $18B AUM RIA.
