AGM Alts Weekly | 6.7.26: The collision of culture and finance
AGM Alts Weekly #158: Making private markets more public, every week.
“Alt Goes Mainstream is category of one.” Global Head of Marketing & Communications, $X00B AUM alternative asset manager.
“When it comes to the intersection of alternative investments and wealth management, Michael just gets it.” CIO, $18B AUM RIA.

For too long, private equity funds have relied on manual processes — spreadsheets, scattered documents, disjointed data — to track complex investment and ownership structures. It’s slow, error-prone, and not scalable. And when regulators, investors, or auditors come knocking, it’s a fire drill every time.
At DealsPlus, we help private equity funds digitise investment and ownership structures, eliminating data silos. Our software helps power key workflows such as: quarterly reporting, audits, compliance, and exits.
Good morning from London. I’m heading to Berlin for SuperReturn this week.
It will be a full agenda at SuperReturn, as it always is for everyone attending the conference.
I’ll be chairing the Private Wealth Summit at SuperReturn on Tuesday and then moderating two panels that aim to get to the heart of the GP / LP dynamic in private wealth.
We’ll kick off the day with a conversation about the nuances of increasing the wealth channel's adoption of private markets with UBS Co-Head of the Unified Global Alternatives business, Johannes Roth, and KKR MD and Head of Global Wealth Solutions - International, Markus Egloff.
Then, we’ll move to a panel discussion that I’ll be moderating on why European wealth managers are investing in private equity, with KKR Partner and Co-CEO of K-PEC Alisa Amarosa Wood, HSBC Head of Alternatives, Private Bank Emma Cory, Julius Baer Managing Director, Head of Fund Advisory Adrienne Jarsvall, and UBS Lead Private Equity Advisory Platform, UGA Emma Corbishley.
On Wednesday and Thursday, AGM will be live from SuperReturn Berlin.
Who better to partner with than the OG of private markets financial media, Deirdre Bolton, and the Prosek team to produce AGM Live from SuperReturn? Deirdre created and launched “Money Moves with Deirdre Bolton” at Bloomberg TV, unpacking the growth in private markets at a time when the industry was just starting to move into the mainstream. She then developed and hosted “Women & Money with Deirdre Bolton” and “Risk & Reward with Deirdre Bolton” at the Fox Business Network before covering world economic events for ABC News on “Good Morning America,” “World News Tonight,” and “Nightline.” She began her career in institutional equity sales at CDC North America and Société Générale.
We’ll be having in-depth conversations with a number of senior executives from some of the largest alternative asset managers in the industry to discuss the next phase in the evolution of the adoption of private markets by the wealth channel.
If you happen to be in Berlin for SuperReturn, drop me a line or stop by the Tiny Space cabin where we’ll be on set on Wednesday and Thursday.
Now, onto this week’s topic.
SuperReturn kicks off on Monday with another topic that is shaping the world of private markets: sports investing.
With the Champions League final concluding with a PSG victory on the pitch and in the bank and the World Cup fast approaching, the intersection of sports and investing continues to go from strength to strength.
At a time when an increasing number of alternative asset managers are “getting in the game,” as I wrote on 8.24.25, and participating in sports investments in either teams or leagues, it is interesting to see Real Madrid pursue “prestige over profits.”
The FT’s Nicholas Megaw wrote quite an interesting piece in the Lex column this week, “In World Cup Season, choose your financial trophies carefully,” about the divergence in how Real Madrid is approaching a possible financing relative to how many of its peers have taken in outside capital.
Megaw’s article offers lessons for all investors at a time when the surface area of private markets touches more assets and more investors.
Entertaining the sale of a stake in the storied Spanish club for the first time, Real Madrid President Florentino Pérez likened the investment to being more “like a sponsorship,” in an interview with the FT this week.
Real’s valuation would be nothing to sneeze at.
Reaching for the stars
Megaw’s literary parallel between Real Madrid’s “Galacticos” nickname, which has a long lineage of creating teams comprised of superstars, and the skyrocketing valuation of the nearly public SpaceX does not appear accidental.
Pérez is reportedly seeking a €10B valuation, which would be around 9x Real Madrid’s annual revenue.
That is quite a punchy valuation multiple considering Apollo recently paid around 5x revenues for Real’s crosstown rival Atletico Madrid. Megaw also notes Italian champions and iconic global brand Juventus trades for less than three times revenue.
Real’s purported valuation compares more favorably to many of the teams in America’s biggest leagues, as the below chart from Sportico illustrates.
The difference?
The US sports leagues, including its men’s and women’s soccer leagues, where MLS teams trade at 9.4x revenues and burgeoning NWSL teams trade at 6.8x revenues, are devoid of relegation like its European league counterparts.
Clubs in England’s Premier League, which arguably has some of the world’s most iconic and global football brands and top teams, trade at a much lower revenue multiple in large part due to the painful financial penalty of relegation.
As an early investor in the NWSL’s Angel City, I have certainly benefited from the higher valuation multiples US clubs have received. But I can’t help but think that valuations across soccer clubs globally should compress over time, particularly when many top global brands in the sport trade at well below 7x revenues.
Real Madrid will likely point to its industry-leading revenue and a history of profitability, as the chart below from the FT highlights.
Megaw notes that Pérez’s supporters have “likened it to buying a work of art.”
Brand certainly has value. There’s no doubt about that, as I wrote in last week’s AGM Alts Weekly.
Brand creates a magnetic pull that brings in and keeps true fans. That has certainly been the case with a handful of sports brands, including PSG, whose marketing masterstroke created a brand that transcended its own sport to associate with Michael Jordan’s air of greatness.
Sports teams have the unique ability to create enduring relationships with their fans in ways that few other brands do. There’s an element of intergenerational fandom that makes it rather incomparable to other brands that look to create a long-lasting connection.
Perhaps this makes Pérez plea of ownership as a matter of “prestige over profits” somewhat plausible.
Culture 🤝 Finance
Will investors look at sports teams such as Real Madrid as “cultural assets?”
I wrote about this phenomenon in January 2021, in Alt Goes Mainstream’s first-ever written post, noting that the mainstreaming of alts meant that investors could marry their interests with their investing activity:
Ability for Investors to Marry Interests with Investments: Never before have investors been able to marry their interests with their investments in such a direct manner. Now, an investor who is a lifelong Chicago Bulls fan can go on Rally Rd and invest into an offering of all 6 Chicago Bulls NBA Championship Rings. Need proof that there was interest? The offering raised $300k and was sold out in 2 minutes.
Putting Your Money Where the Movement Is - Rise of Influencer Investors: We are seeing a rise in influencers - athletes, creators, artists - with meaningful followership. These influencers are increasingly able to direct their followers to buy, use, or invest in things that they promote, which is now more likely than ever to be something they are also invested in - a company, a trading card, a collectible.
2021 was certainly a strange time from an investing perspective on a number of levels, but there are some lessons to be learned.
If you listen closely to the intro music of Alt Goes Mainstream, you’ll hear my voiceover saying, “the collision of culture and finance.”
Perhaps the news of Real Madrid offering a stake in the club is a good example of the collision of culture and finance.
Real is a cultural icon, a world-renowned brand. People want to associate with a brand of greatness and high performance, and for good reason.
It’s why we saw EQT become the Official Private Markets Partner with the ATP Tour this week.
Coinciding with the rollout of EQT’s brand, “Better never ends,” EQT CEO & Managing Partner Per Franzen said that the partnership with the ATP reflects EQT’s approach to investing:
“Tennis has always been about more than athleticism – it demands strategy, discipline, and the relentless pursuit of improvement. Those same qualities are reflected in EQT’s approach to investing.”
Brand matters in private markets more than ever. And firms will be (rightfully so) making a push to associate their brands with something that resonates with investors as the industry undergoes a wave of consumerization amid an increasing focus on the wealth channel.
The ultimate trophy
Perhaps the old adage, “the fastest way to become a millionaire is to be a billionaire who buys a football club,” is fading given that sports teams appear to be very much investable and very much creating value.
But if sports teams are being viewed as cultural assets first and foremost by financial investors, it’s a worthwhile reminder that the only trophy you get in investing is when you generate returns.
At the end of the day, investing is about performance and returns. While it’s worth noting that there’s an increased interest in investing in cultural assets (which, at times, can also deliver returns), it’s also a good time to remember that perhaps we should also be making boring cool because it’s profits rather than prestige that mark the final scoreline in investing.
AGM Index
AGM has created an Index to track the leading publicly traded alternative asset managers.
Some of the industry’s largest alternative asset managers are publicly traded — and their net inflows can serve as a window into how private markets are being perceived by investors and allocators who are allocating capital into alternative investments.
Note: AUM figures are based on fee-paying AUM where applicable.
🤝 Interested in the AGM RIA Field Trips? 🤝

Who is hiring?
In order for alts to continue to go mainstream, we need the best talent to go into the space. Here are some openings at private markets firms. If you’d like to connect with any of these teams, let me know, and I’m happy to facilitate an introduction if appropriate. If you’re a company or fund in private markets, feel free to reach out to share a job description you’d like to be listed here to highlight for the Alt Goes Mainstream community.
